If you need help with a case, or would like to know more about typical collie behaviour presentations, I can help! I can explain about why collies are likely to carry out certain behaviours, and how to devise behaviour and training plans that helps collies and their humans.
Typical collie presentations include:
- Shadow/reflection/light fixation and chasing
- Car/cyclist/jogger chasing
- Resource guarding of owners, food or other items
- “Herding” behaviours
- Aggression towards other dogs or people
- High arousal and no off switch
- Breed specific behaviour games and activities
- Tail chasing, fly snapping syndrome
- Fears and phobias, especially noises
I’ve lived with 7 collies over the years, as pets as well as sports dogs or working sheepdogs (with my small flock of pet sheep), and have seen many hundreds with behaviour problems over the last few years since focusing exclusively on collies.
As with all breeds, it helps to think about why collies were bred and what behaviour characteristics were valued and bred from as opposed to which characteristics were not so important. What did their typical daily lives on farms look like?
I can also share what training games and techniques can help with different behaviour problems, and what medical issues collies are prone to, and how these typically affect behaviour.
The best advice I can give is focus less on looking for “herding” behaviours and more on the typical types of emotions and motivations that all breeds of dogs have in common. Beware of labelling everything “herding” as this is rarely the case.
